IB Programme

                                                       International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Colegio Gran Bretana is an IB World School. We were authorised to offer the IB Diploma Programme in March 2008. The school will begin teaching the programme in August 2008.

It is important that parents, students and stakeholders log onto the IBO webpage (https://www.ibo.org/) to find out more about the organisation, its mission and vision and how this will enhance student learning at CGB. Another important link to the website is: https://www.ibo.org/diploma/become/ (English) and https://www.ibo.org/es/diploma/become/ (Spanish) where parents and students can find important information on the general rules of the Diploma Programme.

Please find below extracts from the IBO website that highlight some important information and will give you a quick glance into the International Baccalaureate:

“The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers high quality programmes of international education to a worldwide community of schools.
The IB is a nonprofit educational foundation, motivated by its mission, focused on the student.
Our three programmes (Primary Years Programme – age 3-12, Middle Years Programme – age 11-16 and Diploma Programme – age 16-19) for students aged 3 to 19 help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.
Founded in 1968, we currently work with 2,261 schools in 126 countries to develop and offer three challenging programmes to over 602,000 students aged 3 to 19 years.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a challenging two-year curriculum, primarily aimed at students aged 16 to 19. It leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.
Students learn more than a collection of facts. The Diploma Programme prepares students for university and encourages them to:
  • ask challenging questions
  • learn how to learn
  • develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture
  • develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.
Schools teach the programme in English, French and/or Spanish.”

The curriculum contains six subject groups together with a core made up of three separate parts.

This is illustrated by a hexagon with the three parts of the core at its centre.

Students study six subjects selected from the subject groups. Normally three subjects are studied at higher level (courses representing 240 teaching hours over the two years), and the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level (courses representing 150 teaching hours over the two years).

All three parts of the core – extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, action, service – are compulsory and are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme.
At CGB, we will be offering the following IB Diploma subjects in 2008-2009:

Group 1: English / Spanish A1- HL
Group 2: English A2 – HL / Spanish B HL / French B SL
