ALD
Additional Language Department
The ALD consists of eight teachers who teach English and Spanish as additional languages throughout the school. All teachers are bilingual and either ICELT qualified or specialised in the area of bilingualism in the International School context.
We work closely with the classroom and subject teachers in the different sections to ensure that our students have a proficiency language level that will allow them to reach their full potential in all of their different curriculum subjects. When an external language tutor is required, we help parents find the appropriate person and co-ordinate the academic follow up.
We also provide staff coaching sessions to:
- Improve English proficiency when it is an additional language.
- Maximise teaching strategies to support language learners in the mainstream classroom.
- Explore different channels of professional development in the area of English language teaching.
ACQUISITION OF SPANISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE AT COLEGIO GRAN BRETAÑA
We believe that learning any additional language beyond one’s mother tongue provides students with opportunities to explore and experience other cultures. In this context, the teaching of Spanish as an additional language is a valuable opportunity for all international students to communicate and establish cultural connections with the Colombian environment or any other Spanish-speaking country. This approach enables foreign students to comprehend the local culture, interact with friends, neighbors, and people from the real and everyday world, fostering an immersive experience in Spanish and cultivating an international mindset and global citizenship.
CGB offers 4 hours of Spanish as a second language per week. This curriculum equips students with the linguistic and communicative foundations necessary to engage with the language. Additionally, they have 3 hours of learning in the subject “Colombian Culture,” taught by bilingual teachers. This aims to promote the use of Spanish while ensuring that students who may not yet have sufficient proficiency can access content in both Spanish and English. The goal is to acquire knowledge about key aspects of Colombian culture, facilitating better adaptation and integration processes.
Furthermore, students are exposed to the local language in subjects such as Physical Education, Performing Arts (most teachers are bilingual, with Spanish as their mother tongue), various extracurricular activities, and, of course, during breaks and lunchtime when students express themselves in both English and Spanish.
We invite foreign students without prior knowledge of Spanish to seize the opportunity to learn and use this language. Colombians are always eager to help them have a wonderful experience in this remarkable country, and what better way to connect than through the use of the local language.
